- The Indian Head penny was produced from 1859 through 1909. It was designed in the Philadelphia Mint by an engraver named Barton Longacre. The coin features an image of Lady liberty with a feather bonnet. The world LIBERTY is shown on the bonnet. The other side shows a laurel wreath. The coins were made of mostly copper and are considered an iconic part of American culture.
