December 5th marks the repeal of Prohibition in the United States. At the turn of the 20th century, alcohol was seen by many, especially women and labor unions, as a source of evil. Women often felt that the drink was a destroyer of the family and marriages, and labor unions needed its workers sober to work long, grueling hours at often dangerous jobs. Therefore, in 1917, the Volstead Act (the 18th Amendment), also known as Prohibition, was passed.
Ironically, this temperance law actually had the opposite effect. Enforcing Prohibition proved to be extremely difficult. Bootlegging (the illegal production and distribution of liquor) became rampant, and the government didn’t have the means or desire to try to enforce every border, lake, river, and speakeasy in America. These speakeasies and bootlegged liquor fueled the Roaring Twenties, a decade marked by loosening morals, flappers, huge glittery parties, and an overvalued stock market.
With the crashing of the stock market, came the crashing of the 18th Amendment, which was repealed in 1933. So, in honor of this date, and in light of the upcoming holiday season full of parties, sparkle, and bubbly drinks, let’s celebrate with some fun and festive alcohol-related cuff links!
